Is it ok to have protein shakes while pregnant?
Ok, so I'm starting to feel the great and wonderful nauseated feeling now at 6 1/2 weeks and don't want to eat sometimes (but I still gag stuff down). Is it ok to have a protein shake here and there if you don't feel like eating, to get your protein in?? I can only drink so much milk at a time (slightly lactose intolerant post op), so I mean I can do three cups of that a day to get some protein in, but are protein shakes ok sometimes?
Thanks!
Thanks!
I had to start protein shakes with Niko at around 15 wks...per my high risk doc. I should've probably started them earlier. It was a weight gainer because Nioko was not gaining weight and I was losing too much. Hubby jusr broguht up strting them again because I'm only clearing about 700 calories per day.
That was just my case. Take yours to you OB and have them look at the label. Ask them if it's okay.
I completely understand. I've already lost 10 lbs and I really don't have it to lose.

I wouldn't see why you couldn't. My RD suggested adding protien bars...in addition to good food choices to raise my intake...which later in pregnancy is not an issue. But I would not rely on them as your sole source of a meal, like before pregnancy. Example: light yogurt for breakfast at 6am, 9 am protien shake / prot. bar. I would use them like a snack or a supplement to you if you aren't able to get much down at a meal. It's especially important to add if you are struggling with meats / diary. I can barely tolerate meat (I usually gag very small amounts)- it's awful. And a person should only have so many servings of cheese (even low fat) ..So I eat protien bars as my snacks. Good luck-- I am sure the gaging issue will get better in a few more weeks.
Well- I love the snicker marthon low carb bars, they make them in peanut and fudge brownie..the other snicker brand (I believe just marthons) are not workable for me...to many carbs. They helped me get tons of protien in...also there is one I think it's called met rx- (red wrapper) they sell big ones at Wal-Mart and I find the smaller ones (which I use as snack) at target. At this point I don't consider the fat...or calories..just look at carbs and sugar & protien. I am a very fussy protien eater if it's not from food. Shakes make me barf...always have since day one...no matter how good anyone said they were..I invested TONS of money trying things..same results. So- that is why I went to bars. South Beach has a protien peanut butter bar...they are yummy- but not as packed full of protien (I think they have 10grams) as the ones I first mentioned. The snicker ones are my favorite source of protien supplements- but they are hard to fine..and I don't eat the brownie one unless I crave sweets (just my way of having a treat). Good luck- keep eating, and supplementing to avoid ketosis and keep the baby growin.
Thanks, I'll have to look for some protein bars and see if I can find the snickers ones, since I love their candy bars too. I am not too fond of protein shakes, but if I can't find a bar I like, I'll have to do the shakes.
P.S. I love how your baby ticker says "I've now got more brain cells than Paris & Nicky Hilton put together".... LOL!!!!

I drank protein shakes throughout my post op pregnancy. I would eat 5-6 small meals per day and one or two of those "meals" might consist of a slim fast shake. Not to lose weight, but to get my protein. And if you read the nut info, it's full of vitamins & nutrients. In the beginning, its just whatever you can "stomach". Best of luck.
